UN peacekeepers 'failed' DR Congo rape victims

The UN admitted in September that it had “failed” the victims of a systematic rape campaign in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

First thought to have affected up to 200 women and children, the figure was quickly revised upwards to almost 500. Atul Khare, UN Assistant Secretary-General for Peacekeeping, told the Security Council “we must do better”.
