Freedom from Torture voice concerns over draft Repeal Bill

Freedom from Torture have voiced their concern following the Government’s publication of a draft Repeal Bill, which rules out any incorporation of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights into UK law following Brexit, including the prohibition on all forms of torture and degrading or inhuman treatment.

Freedom from Torture’s CEO Susan Munroe said:

“At this time of political uncertainty, it is crucial that the UK Government holds fast to its long-standing human rights principles.

“The prohibition on torture enshrined in the Charter is entirely in keeping with the UK’s proud history of opposing torture: disposing of it would be short-sighted, unnecessary, and a poor reflection of our values.

"The Government should reconsider this flawed decision, and ensure that they fully uphold their commitment to opposing torture, both during the Brexit process and after the UK leaves the EU."
