Freedom from Torture in joint NGO call for independent judge-led inquiry into UK complicity in rendition and torture

Alistair Carmichael MP (Orkney and Shetland) has obtained a debate in Parliament tomorrow (Wednesday 29 June) on UK complicity in extraordinary rendition and torture. Freedom from Torture is one of four NGOs calling on the UK Government for an independent judge-led inquiry. Ahead of the debate, Sonya Sceats, Director of Policy and Advocacy, Freedom from Torture, said:

"In this moment when the values that Britain stands for are once again in the global spotlight, the Government should re-assert our long tradition of justice by delivering its promise to hold an independent judge-led inquiry to expose the full truth about UK complicity in extraordinary rendition and torture.

“A human rights-compliant inquiry is essential to get to the bottom of what happened, support those working inside the intelligence services to prevent further British involvement in torture, and deliver justice for the survivors who endured unspeakable brutality at the hands of our security partners in Libya and elsewhere."
