At first when women join our Survivor Women’s Group they often begin just watching, sitting in silence. Not taking part in the activities. Their trust in humanity is broken. They’re lonely and traumatised. Exhausted. Nervous. They feel like they are no one.
The women who attend the group have often faced years of torture, abuse and trauma, but it’s here that they regain their strength. And with support from kind people like you, we can be there for the women when they need us most.
Freedom from Torture have helped me with everything, including one to one therapy. I was in so much pain when I arrived, even physical pain. But as the therapy helped me, I could relax more and sleep more. Even the physical pain went away.
Your donation would mean that someone like Gulan, who escaped torture with her two children, will have somewhere to turn for support. Back home, Gulan was locked up and tortured by her own family because she fell in love with a man of a different religion.
When she first arrived to the UK, Gulan could barely look anyone in the face, never mind speak to the group or take part in activities. But alongside individual therapy sessions, the Survivor Women’s Group provided Gulan with an opportunity to thrive, not just survive.
Help change a torture survivor’s life
In the group the women share food, talk, do creative activities, learn English, discuss their hopes, make plans for the future. Together, they focus on a future of promise, the women learn about their rights and the fact they are equal citizens of this country.
For Gulan, “The women’s group is something I look forward to every week. We meet women from different cultures. My children made friends for life here, just as I have.”
If you can, please change a torture survivor’s life with a gift. Your support could give a woman like Gulan the opportunity to create life-long friendships and finally begin the life they deserve.
