Freedom from Torture and Survivors Speak OUT call for sign up to principles for welcoming newcomers to Uk
Freedom from Torture and the Survivors Speak OUT network are among more than 250 charities, community organisations, churches and others that have signed up to the "Birmingham Declaration", a set of principles for working with asylum-seeking and migrant communities in the UK.
The Declaration initiated by City of Sanctuary movement affirms Britain's long tradition of offering protection to those fleeing persecution. Among the asks and principles are that politicians debate immigration in a way that has a care for vulnerable newcomers; that there is a fair process for granting refugee protection; and also that there should be an end to destitution and indefinite detention; and a presumption that all new migrant groups will be welcomed and have the opportunity to integrate
It is planned to carry on gathering support for the Declaration across the faith, community, public and private sectors, before sending it to all party leaders before the election. Read the full Declaration and find out more .
