Thank you for making a difference: Janet’s lasting legacy
As a teacher, Janet Molloy worked with students, helping them learn and grow. Now, she is committed to helping torture survivors rebuild their lives by leaving a gift in her Will.
“Educating people was one thing. But seeing their confidence go from strength to strength was always such a big, positive thing for me and for them.”
Janet has kindly pledged to leave Freedom from Torture a gift in her Will, because our values, of increasing torture survivors’confidence and empowering survivors to make their own choices, resonate strongly with her.
She has been involved in re-establishing the Birmingham local group and she has taken part in our Journeys of Solidarity challenge, raising funds by walking an impressive 66 miles in Scotland and Northumberland.
I loved empowering my students to make confident decisions. I know that Freedom from Torture also aims to increase people’s confidence, which is why I’ve chosen to leave them a gift in my Will.
Originally from West Hartlepool, Janet moved to Birmingham when her husband, an NHS worker who helped people with learning difficulties, found a job in a local hospital.
They settled down and started a family, and while Janet’s daughter and son were growing up, she became involved with a national adult literacy scheme, called Right to Read. From there, Janet taught basic Maths and English in the local community until she retired.
“Freedom from Torture offers levels of trust and empathy that are very personal, so whatever somebody needs – whether it’s therapy, or understanding where they are with legal systems – they can find the right support.”
I believe the support of even just one person can make a huge difference
A keen supporter of a number of charities for many years, Janet heard about Freedom from Torture because of Sir John McCarthy, one of our patrons. “I remember reading his book, and Terry Waite’s as well. They helped me realise the importance of doing everything possible to help torture survivors rebuild their lives” she said.
Having recently become a grandmother to two girls, Janet chose to leave a gift in her Will to Freedom from Torture, as well as the other charities she supports, after her husband sadly passed away.
“I had to redo my Will, and once I’d made sure my family would be looked after, it seemed right and fair to also leave a gift for others,” she said.
